Large Diving Gear

Whale Shark Diving – Guinjata Bay – Mozambique

GUINJATA BAY is situated south of Inhambane in the Jangamo Bay area. It is approximately 53O km north of Maputo. The road from Maputo to Inhambane is tarred. The last 25 km to the resort is a sand road and only accessible with a 4 x 4 vehicle or a 2 x 4 with a difflock.

Guinjata Bay Resort offers 2 rubberducks (Zodiac) for diving charters. There are also 3 Bauer compressors to fill cylinders. Guinjata Bay also offer full time Instructors, Dive Masters and courses. All diving gear are available to rent - especially for people flying in.

Package deals including meals, accommodation and dives are on offer. Smaller groups or individuals are all being catered for and night dives are available on request.

The area offers a number of diving spots which includes the following:

This reef is approximately 1,5 km from the launch site and offers a variety of dive sites. The outer edge of the reef drops down to 21 meters while other areas of the reef come up to 9m. There are a number of dive sites on this reef which have not been named as yet. One area in particular is wall to wall with sea anemones, other areas are full of brightly coloured nudibranches and sea cucumbers. Although this reef is relatively close in, we have often seen Manta and Devil rays. The outer edge regularly produces sightings of game fish and larger rays resting in the sand.

Explore the warm tropical waters of Mozambique and swim with the gentle whale sharks and manta rays. Shark Alley Dive and Travel Centre specializes in dive holiday packages to numerous top diving sites around Mozambique.

This reef is approximately 12 km north of the launch site and therefore can only be reached when the sea is relatively calm. This reef is large and offers a great variety of dives ranging from 18m to 35m on the outer edge. As it is situated in the main current, sighting of Manta and Devil rays are more common. Three cleaning stations for Manta's have been identified and Manta's are spotted on a regular basis. Whale Sharks, Sharks and various pelagic fish are often seen. One of the better spots, called "Manta" offers unbelievable diving with vast shoals of reef fish as well as game fish to be seen. Spanish Dancers have been seen swimming in broad daylight. This reef regularly produces world class diving!

This reef starts close to the shore and runs down to 35m very quickly offering excellent sightings of reef fish on one side with game fish lurking on the other. Many lion fish can be seen in one spot. The shallow protected area has brilliant corals. Again this reef has many spots which have not been named yet. The inner side of the reef is extremely well protected and provides almost pool like conditions for student training and snorkeling.

This reef is about 6 kms south of Paindane. Several whale sharks are spotted here on a regular basis. This site is rarely dived and thus unexplored. A lot of reefs are still to be discovered.

Jet skiing is a very popular summer pastime. As popular as these personal water craft are they are also dangerous. There are more jet ski accidents reported every summer than any other water sport or leisure activity.

Due to the fact that this piece of water craft is less expensive than purchasing a boat, some people rent or own them as a way to enjoy time on the water. Doo Ladies Neoprene

Dive Diva's everywhere have questioned how to tame their wild tresses. While we know that we aren't going to look like the Sports Illustrated models after a dive, we certainly shouldn't surrender to a shaved head either. Saltwater wreaks havoc on our hair leaving a salt residue that depletes the hair of it's natural moisture. Add blowing wind into the equation and the result is split ends and brittle hair that feels like straw.

Hair care for Girl Divers is three fold. You must treat your hair before you subject it to the elements, manage your hair during the dives, and restore your hair after the dives. Chlorine and saltwater can discolor and dry out the hairs cuticle. Before diving, wet down hair with cool tap water, which will seal the cuticle. Hair is like a sponge; it can only absorb so much water. If it's wet to begin with, it won't absorb as much damaging chlorine and saltwater.

Swear by leave-in conditioner and never leave for the dive without it. Protecting skin with sunscreen is good sense, and the same goes for hair. If you can find a conditioner with a sunscreen in it, all the better, as the UV rays will turn your hair a brassy shade. Also, using some hair creme or pomade as a conditioning barrier will reduce the amount of salt that can adhere to the hair follicles.

During the dive, if you have long hair, you'll want to secure it before pulling and tugging on your neoprene hood. Putting hair into a braid or a series of pony holders keeps hair from becoming caught in the hood. Using the conditioner before braiding, will help to hold the braid in place. You may want to wear a lycra "doo rag" over your hair before putting on your hood. Alternatively, a "shark skin" or "titanium" lining in the hood will also ease with removal of the hood off at the end of your dive.

If you're diving a tropical destination, you may consider a beanie for night dives (as this will not only tame your tresses but avoid getting blood worms tangling in your locks). For day use, a "slap strap", available at most dive stores will keep the mask strap from catching on your hair.

We are told to rinse our gear thoroughly after a dive, but any good Girl Diver knows, that beauty comes before gear rinsing. As soon as possible, rinse out your hair with fresh water. You may find a fresh water shower on the boat or at the dive site. There are also a myriad of shampoos made to remove harsh elements from your hair at your local salon.

Put a wide-toothed comb in your Save-A-Dive kit, so that you can get through those tangles on your way to the pizza place. Again, if you've got some spray in conditioner with you, now would be a great time to add another round to the hair, as it's just been through the dehydration routine. Keep your hair trimmed of split ends and use a clarifying shampoo weekly to keep your hair looking great.

Even the divas of diving have to treat their locks. "I'm not very good with my hair and don't think about it much," Tanya Streeter said from her home in Austin, Texas. "When I know I'm going to be in the water, I just coat it with a ton of conditioner, braid it, and wear it down my wet suit."
