High Performance

You may have heard the term "jetting" before and wondered what it meant. Jetting is the act of adjusting the separate fuel circuits in a carburetor to optimize the fuel/air mixture going into the engine. To the untrained person jetting can come across as being very complicated and some people fear the process. Once you understand which circuits control what part of the throttle cycle, you will learn that jetting isn't at all that difficult. The following will describe what each circuit does and how to adjust that circuit for optimum performance. This assumes that you have a Keihin FCR type carburetor (the information translates to other carburetors as well) which is found on almost every modern high performance four stroke ATV engine.

Fuel screw: Adjusts the "hang up" of the engine when you go from wide open to idle quickly. If your engine doesn't smoothly idle back down or "hangs up" when you let off the throttle you need to adjust the fuel screw out (richer) to clean this up. If your engine idles down and then dies you need to turn the screw in (leaner) to allow less gas into the engine. Play around with the screw until your engine idles down smoothly.

Pilot jet: Controls 0 to 1/4 throttle. This jet requires the least amount of adjusting over the rest. If your engine cuts out when you rev it up then you need to make this richer (higher number) if it bogs when you rev it up you need to make this leaner (lower number).

Needle jet: Controls 1/4 to 3/4 throttle. You can tell the most when this is out of tune when you do holeshots. If your engine is bogging when you dump the clutch on a holeshot or you are riding at a constant 1/2 throttle and you engine is bogging then you need to move the c-clip up one notch (drops the needle making it leaner). If the engine is cutting out in these situations you need to move the c-clip down one notch (raises the needle making it richer). Setting the c-clip in the middle slot is a good place to start.

Main jet: Controls 3/4 to full throttle and also affects all other jets slightly. This circuit is tested when you hold the throttle wide open. If your engine is bogging the you need to make the jet leaner (lower number) and if it is pinging or cutting out you need to make it richer (higher number).

Jetting can be very touchy and tedious. At any rate your engine should rev at a constant RPM at any throttle position and should rev up and idle down with no hesitations. Once you start getting your hands dirty and listening to your engine you will become an expert at jetting. Hope this helped and good luck!

What lightweight, high-performance car battery should I use for my Chevy Cobalt SS n/a 2.4l?

I have a super e-ram electric supercharger that draws 120amps for 15 seconds. When the e-rams engage, the lights dim. Would a 33lb optima red top (720cca) or a 26lb odyssey pc925 (380cca but 925, 5sec cranking amps) be more appropriate for my needs?
Also, I'm planning on grounding it better. My battery is currently located in the trunk, but I plan on mounting the new, replacement battery where the rear seats were (removed). Would adding a high-performance audio capacitor help? I'm trying to balance weight vs cranking power. My stock battery has 600cca (BCI90). Thanks for your help!

You need a larger alternator and a cap. 1 farrad would do nicely. It is a capacitor that makes up for those spikes in power consumption. www.crutchfield.com

Wakeboard Foundation

Whoever said that learning anything new was easy is probably bluffing. Like learning to ride a bike, the first few times will be difficult as well as discouraging for the beginner. And without the right guidance and proper motivation, you might give up that easily.  Kite surfing is no different from other sports.  With the right instructor to provide you a solid foundation, you can definitely shorten the learning curve and can improve faster than self-taught riders.

Training Equipment

Before heading out to sign up for your first lessons, there are a couple of things that you can do to stay ahead of every beginner out there. The first thing to get is a training kite. This will help you learn all the basic fundamentals in trying to gain control of the kite. Training kites are designed to be smaller than the real kites as they mostly used for learning and instruction. Since mastering the kite is what most instructors will first teach you, a training kite gives you the necessary experience in handling before you even head out for your first lessons. By practicing with the training kite, you are starting to build the basic skills before you even head out.

Find Your Wind Window

Next thing you need to know is how to gauge the wind direction to find your wind window. As you look towards the wind, or downwind, just throw your arms to form an X or a cross, and try to move them towards each other. As you move your hands, be aware on where they are using your peripheral vision. By doing this technique, you are mostly to find the bottom edge of the wind window.

Now, move them into an arc position above your head, but still far enough to see them. You have just laid out the top portion of your wind window. Of course, all the techniques mentioned above will take some constant practice to get used to, but once you've mastered them all, you will have an easier control of the kiteboard.

Learning how to steer the kite is the next thing to accomplish. This generally involves the manual practice of moving and pulling back the bar, moving it to left and right to get used to the motion. Practice this motion to establish muscle memory, once you've got this down then you are on the right path on how to control the kiteboard.

Next on the list is positioning basics. Try to practice your power stroke. For those that do not know this, a power stroke is what you do to get up on the board. Make sure to also practice board starts or the correct method of positioning your legs as you move up from the water.

As you practice, try to strap in your equipment to get a feel on board. Start moving the kite to get an idea on how it will react when you're really out on sea. To mix it up, you can even try to use skateboards or rollerblades to get a different experience. Just make sure to do this with the right safety equipment.  Just try to start slow and increase speed as gain more experience. 

Learning how to kiteboarding will really take some time. In fact, it isn't uncommon for beginners to practice at least 10 hours before their first kite surfing lesson.  But with the right preparation by following the methods mentioned above, you are already way above the rest.
