A lot of people show interest in growing aloe vera plants in their backyards not only because commercially prepared products like the aloe juice is a bit pricey but because the plant has many uses and medicinal benefits. The plant is known for its healing and soothing properties. I personally use the gel to treat insect bites and in a few seconds, the itch goes away.
The plant is vase-shaped and spread by shallow roots. Although it seldom blooms as a houseplant, when it is grown outdoors or in a properly ventilated green house, it can produce tall stalks of one inch long green, white, yellow or orange flowers.
Aloe vera plants are suited best in a very well drained potting mix that contains sand, perlite, pumice or sharp grit. If you would like an indoor setting, place the plant where it can receive bright light. If you would like it to move outdoors during the summer, do so gradually by placing it first in dappled light. When we say dappled light, we simply mean speckled or spotted. Keep in mind that the plant cannot stand any frost. You can help your plants adjust to indoor conditions by bringing it inside before nights get cool in fall. For outdoors, the plant can grow in full sun to partial shade. Another important thing to remember is that the soil should be moderately fertile and fast draining.
During the winter, aloe vera plants become quiescent and they utilize very little moisture so watering should be minimal. Let the soil become completely dry before giving the plants a cup or two of water. During the summer months, it should be the opposite and by that we mean the soil should be totally soaked. Wait of the soil to dry though before re-watering.
The plant is propagated by removing the offsets that are produced around the base of the mature ones. You can also grow them from seeds if you wish to.

How do I stop my 1 year old yellow lab from chewing on everything?
I have a yellow lab pup who just turned a year old. Now that the weather is great outside, I have left her in the backyard during the day when I am at work. She has plenty of room to run around and release her energy, but she persists in chewing up the inground sprinkler heads, the water hose, the satellite cable wiring attached to the side of the house (well they were until she found them) and anything else that isn't well above her head. I have put chew toys outside for her, but seems to prefer the "off limits" items. I walk her and run with her when I get home to help release any energy left over. But how do I stop her from being so destructive when I am gone?
Not all dogs can be left alone outside all day, except in a secure outdoor dog run. If she is chewing cables, it sounds as she should be inside, for her own safety as well as yours.
Dogs that are left outside unsupervized are also at the mercy of relentless teasing. That can be enough bring out aggressiveness in the sweetest dogs.
Even if your dog were perfectly fine, I still wouldn't do it. You never know what can happen when you are not home. Dogs do get stolen, abused, and people can throw all kinds of garbage into your yard that will make her sick.
You might think she is happier outside but all that chewing tells me she is not. She is probably anxious, like a young human child would be if left alone in a large house.
Don't feel bad about keeping the dog inside during the day. I work at home, and still my dogs sleep through most of the day. As long as she gets a lot of exercise and attention in the evenings, she will be fine.
