NEW Shows at Black Maria

Michael Hsiung: Solo Exhibition
October 25th through November 15th, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, 25th of October, 7:00 - 10:30pm

Black Maria Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of Michael Hsiung’s latest works. The exhibition, in Michael’s inimitable style is called, “A little collection of drawings, that more closely depicts a group of musical performers, who are extremely peculiar, priorly unknown, but now famous. “

Michael illustrates his own imaginative world. According to Michael, it is, “a place where creatures of fairy tales, nursery rhymes, and lullabies, which are a part of our childhood and adult culture, interact - be it warring or not. …These themes are often combined with humor commonly used by those in dysfunctional relationships.”

Michael Hsiung was born in 1976 in Los Angeles’ Chinatown. He has been showing his work since 2006 in numerous galleries: Carmichael Gallery, Gallery Revisited, and of course, Black Maria Gallery. His work can also be seen in Ruby Magazine, 138 Collective Magazine, Enjoi Skateboards and Saatchi & Saatchi. Michael currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

The Wonder: Andy Kehoe, Ben Kehoe & Hiro Kurata
October 25th through November 15th, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, 25th of October, 7:00 - 10:30pm

The Wonder will feature Andy Kehoe, Ben Kehoe and Hiro Kurata. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, wonder is both, “a: rapt attention or astonishment at something awesomely mysterious or new to one’s experience, b: a feeling of doubt or uncertainty.” This exhibition explores both definitions, presenting to the viewer a visual spectacle designed to captivate the imagination.

Andy Kehoe currently lives and works in the city of champions Pittsburgh, PA. In 2003, he graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. His work serves as an outlet to feelings of unrest and anxiety in this unstable world of ours. Also important is the expression of sincere human emotion without the weight of sarcasm and irony, which has become overabundant in art these days. He has done illustration work for such clients as the New York Times, The Progressive, Metropolis, The Stranger, Fantagraphics and has been included in American Illustration 24.

Ben Kehoe is also located in Pittsburgh, PA. He graduated from Temple University in 2001 and uses his degree as source of constant self-amusement. His influences are nature, pattern-based medieval artwork, comical violence and uncomfortable situations.

Hiro Kurata was born in Osaka Japan, and grew up in Tokyo and Chicago. His main focus is in creating surrealistic moment through his paintings, using motif of baseball figures, chairs and monsters. Creation is a progress and he believes that true creation will contribute to the human society in an evolutionary way. He is currently living and working in Brooklyn, NY.

Black Market At Black Maria: Skip The Mall (2008)
November 22nd through January 3rd, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, 22nd of November, 7:00 - 10:30pm

Artists: Aaron Hitchcock, Aaron White, Annie Aube, Brezo, Chris Uminga, Daniel Elson, Dany Paragouteva, Grace Chee, Heather Watts, Jon Measures, Karyn Raz, Katherine Chiu, Kio Griffith, Lucy Campbell, Max Kauffman, Michael McAlister, Miss Withers, Renee Lawter, Ronald Llanos, Sam Saghatelian, Sarah Stephens, Saratoga Sake, Scott Ferry, Sergio Mora, Shark Tofo, Takara and Tom Haubrick.

Los Angeles – Black Maria Gallery is pleased to announce the fourth annual, “Black Market/Black Maria: Skip the Mall” exhibition. As always, the exhibition will carry a bazaar theme, complete with some of the accoutrements of the shopping experience: paintings suspended on clothing hangers, displayed in shoe boxes and on display stands holding a variety of artworks.
The idea is to both poke gentle fun at the cosmopolitan shopping experience and, on a serious note, remind ourselves of the spiritual rewards of appreciating and owning great art. In keeping with the shopping mall theme, patrons will also be able to take with them whatever they purchase, just as they would in a store.
A painting can be as satisfying as wearing a sexy dress or owning a feature-laden barbecue, except there is an actual, sometimes life-changing meaning waiting to be derived from a work of art. Hence the subtitle of the exhibition: Skip the Mall.

“Black Market” is quintessential Black Maria, showing the work of emerging artists and established artists side by side. It is a great opportunity to see work by artists with international collectors as well as by artists who will be showing their work outside of an academic environment for the first time.

Juri Ueda: Phantom Aquarium
November 22nd through January 3rd, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, 22nd of November, 7:00 - 10:30pm

Black Maria Gallery is pleased to present Phantom Aquarium, an exhibition of Juri Ueda’s latest works. The inspiration for the exhibition comes from Juri’s relationship nature. Living in Japan, water is large part of her landscape.

“I see water as the representation of emotions (sadness, fear, serenity, etc.,) and therefore often find it to be the source of my inspiration. Since my artwork is a tiny piece of my world in that particular moment, it is in a way a tiny aquarium of what will be lost in time, cut out from the big ocean,” Juri Ueda.

Juri lives and works in Osaka, Japan. She received a BFA in Traditional Illustration from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco in 2005. Juri works almost exclusively with watercolors. Some of the galleries that have shown her work include: Suite 100 Gallery in Seattle, Compound Gallery in Portland, Gallery 1988 in San Francisco, Gallery Sora in Osaka and of course Black Maria Gallery in Los Angeles. Juri will have her first solo exhibition at Black Maria Gallery in April of 2009.

Opening Reception: Saturday, 27th of September, 7:00 - 10:30pm

Black Maria pleased to announce the opening of Not All is Golden, a solo exhibition of Jason Hernandez's most recent work.

Jason Hernandez was born in 1983. He received his BFA in Illustration from Art Center College of Design. His painting "Day of the Locust" took first prize at Hollywood Apocalypse, a juried show at Black Maria Gallery in March 2008.

Hernandez attempts to capture humor in many of his works as one of his rules to live by is, "Life is too short to be serious all the time." Additionally, reflected in several of Hernandez's pieces is the influence of Flemish art of the 15th and 16th centuries as well as current media. Capturing these elements in his works reflect Jason Hernandez's style.

NO BROW at Black Maria September 27th through October 18th, 2008

NO BROW
September 27th through October 18th, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, 27th of September, 7:00 - 10:30pm

check LA Weekly for Doug Harvey's Juxtapalooza
The Lowbrow sickness continues to spread, from Burbank to Laguna
http://www.laweekly.com/2008-09-11/art-books/juxtapalooza/

In reaction against the increasing abstraction and intellectual elitism of contemporary art as well as the economic, academic and social institutions that supported it, a small group of like-minded artists and gallerists sought to shed light on works being produced outside the art system. The resulting movement, condescendingly called "Low Brow" by critics pointed to another way of producing, thinking and talking about art. "Low Brow" art emphasized the human subject and his/her insecurities, fears, joys, dreams and nightmares in a figurative, pop culture-tinged style. "Outsider" and "Underground" artists became visible. Artists working in media as diverse as hot rods and children's books illustrations were brought together in a pluralist environment where the value of a work was determined not by its adherence to a particular style or its retail value, but rather its aesthetic and emotional impact.

Yet even among art that aims to be free of traditional categories and definitions, there is an ever-present danger of calcification and rampant commercialization. These dangers threaten to turn even the most unorthodox of movements into an exercise in mainstream banality. The very success of the Low Brow movement may curb those features that once distinguished it from "High Brow" art, with its rules and value judgments.

It is this freedom from art historical and art critical dogma that was the main inspiration behind the founding of Black Maria Gallery. The goal of the gallery has been to celebrate art that is accessible yet deeply personal and visually aesthetic yet unpretentious. In the ever shifting ground of contemporary art, Black Maria aims to present art that keeps true to the spirit of art itself: protean, socially, politically, personally engaged and relevant to more than just those in the know. Low Brow has already created a field from which there will sprout, be filtered and manifested works of genuine artistic power: works that will answer to the standards of neither High nor Low Brow, in effect shaping a "NO BROW" of uncategorizable art.

Participating Artists: Aaron Kraten, Alexandra Wiesenfeld, Brooks Salzwedel, Jane Gotts, Jason Hernandez, Jeff McMillan, Jennybird Alcantara, John Casey, Junko Mizuno, Ken Garduno and Sam Saghatelian.

"Modern Soil", an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles based artists Brooks Shane Salzwedel and John Palmer

Black Maria is pleased to announce the opening of "Modern Soil", an exhibition of new works by Los Angeles based artists Brooks Shane Salzwedel and John Palmer. The exhibition builds on the fight-for-life themes consistent in Salzwedel's art - nature vs. man-made, prehistoric vs. modern, organic vs. structured, recalling a time past, while remaining firmly planted in the present. Palmer¹s works explores landscapes in peril and gives the exhibition contextual layers of introspection and meaning.

With little more than graphite and resin, Salzwedel creates sublime images of nature and industrial development co-existing. Creating an eerie, ethereal tension between the two, while challenging notions of beauty and destruction. Salzwedel's process and materials themselves lend additional depth to his content. The toxic process of the layered resin is initially overshadowed by the beauty of the trees and plant life it contains.

Brooks Shane Salzwedel earned his BFA with distinction from Art Center College of Design in 2004. In addition to his flourishing art practice, he is the designer and producer of an award-winning line of belt buckles, included in Los Angeles Magazine's 2006 "Best Of" issue. Salzwedel's art and accessories have also garnered press in Los Angeles Times Magazine West, GQ, LA Confidential, NY Arts Magazine, Lucky, Juxtapoz, and Timeout.

"Modern Soil" will include an exclusive preview of "Landscape Quartet," four new short films from artist and filmmaker John Palmer. The films are works-in-progress, depicting landscapes in crisis, victims to shifts in permanence and scale. Palmer received his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute and is a recipient of the Princess Grace Foundation Film Honorarium and the James Broughton Film Award. His work has been exhibited around the world, including group shows at Pacific Film Archive and Millennium Film Workshop.

Oksana Badrak: Moon Over Drifters

May 31st through June 21st, 2008
Opening Reception: Saturday, 31st of May, 7:00 - 10:30pm

Black Maria pleased to announce the opening of Moon Over Drifters, a solo exhibition of Oksana Badrak’s most recent work. The artist’s luscious and excessive paintings of imagined realities combine the familiar with the fanciful. In her latest body of work, Badrak’s aim was to create a world in which traditional and modern, eastern and western, mundane and fantastical merge, producing attunement and friction alike.

According to Badrak, “My passion for graphic design and traditional oil painting results in the way I make my work – digitally created elements are made into archival giclee prints, then the print is varnished to allow for elements painted in oil to exist on paper surface.” The collection of paintings includes narratives and portraits, like one of Belka and Strelka, two dogs in the Soviet space program of the 50’s, who orbited the earth and returned home safely.

Born in Russia, Badrak moved to the US as a young girl. Since graduating from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, she has earned acclaim from American Illustration and exhibited throughout the US and abroad.

MENACE AND CHARM: the nostalgia of childhood

At Black Maria Gallery - 26 April through May 24

Jaime Zollars, Kathleen Lolley, Alex Noriega, Matt Burlingame, P. Williams, Leanne Biank, Juri Ueda, Aaron Hitchcock and CJ Metzger.

Opening reception: Saturday, 26 April, 7-10:30 pm

This exhibition explores the dark and innocent cognitions of childhood. The work in this exhibition gives these perceived memories a home. Demons, fairies, putti, mythical beasts and the like will converge on the walls to conjure memories and dreams.

According to Black Maria Gallery director Zara Zeitountsian, "It's not about our actual experiences, but our memories. Vivid yet nonsensical treasures created in our imaginations, metamorphosis into lasting imagery. These images are shaped by our environment and give us an uncanny sense of nostalgia."

Day of the Locust”, works at the studio in the daytime and at night works on a painting he calls, “The Burning of Los Angeles.” The invited artists have created their own interpretation of the painting described in the novel.

...."he was able to think clearly about his picture 'The Burning of Los Angeles' ... he could see all the rough charcoal strokes with which he had blocked it out on the big canvas. Across the top, parallel with the frame, he had drawn the burning city, a great bonfire of architectural styles, ranging from Egyptian to Cape Cod colonial. Through the center, winding from left to right, was a long hill street and down it, spilling into the middle foreground, came the mob carrying baseball bats and torches. For the faces of its members, he was using the innumerable sketches he had made of the people who come to California to die: the cultists of all sorts, economic as well as religious, the wave, airplane, funeral and preview watchers--all those poor devils who can only be stirred by the promise of miracles and then only to violence. A super "Know-All Pierce-All" had made the necessary promise and they were marching behind his banner in a great united front of screwballs and screwboxes to purify the land. No longer bored, they sang and danced joyously in the red light of the flames."

Founded in 2004, Igloo Tornado is an art fraternity represented by four artists with different styles and backgrounds but a shared absurdist sensibility: Tom Neely, Gin Stevens, Scot Nobles and Levon Jihanian. In 2006 Black Maria Gallery hosted their successful inaugural show, catapulting the careers of these four artists to new levels. This is their second show together.

Tom Neely is a painter and cartoonist living in Los Angeles. Trained as a painter, but with his heart in comics, he uses narrative elements to tell stories through his growing body of paintings and comic books. In 2007 he published his award-winning debut graphic novel, The Blot, and had an acclaimed solo show at Black Maria Gallery. Working in various modes of drawing, painting, sculpture and sequential art, Neely represents the next step in the fusion of high art and comics. His new work involves a series of painted comic strip poems and grotesque figurative paintings.

Gin Stevens' art career began the day he was abandoned on the steps of a Baptist Church. His work explores the deep Southern culture that surrounded him from an early age, often depicting natural disasters, portraiture and spiritual imagery. At 17, he took a Greyhound to Chicago with dreams of studying at The Art Institute of Chicago. He soon opted for the punk rock theory of doing it yourself. Gin now resides in Los Angeles, where he has been creating work for private commission, album covers, and rock posters. He has had many shows at galleries in and around Los Angeles over the past several years. His new work is about Elvis.

Scot Nobles creates collages with contrasting textures and images using a unique acrylic paint technique. Words, ideas, colors, designs and motifs all overlap to create a seemingly random, yet structured, pattern. Each of Scot's pieces of art is a snapshot, a moment from his daily life that offers a glimpse into the subconscious inner workings of his mind. He has been exhibiting at galleries throughout Los Angeles since 2004.

Levon Jihanian lives in Los Angeles, California with his wife and cat. His paintings often feature monsters, cyclopses, and vampires. Levon has exhibited in galleries in Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denton, and Ontario. He has written, drawn and self-published several comic books including Bitter Disappointment, Enjoy the Hotdog and Fork Frenzy. His new work is a series of monster portraits that reflect loathing, amusement, and a fascination with humanity's inherent weaknesses.

Black Maria Immigrant Punk October 20 – November 10 2007

Immigrant Punk Opening Reception: Saturday 20th October, 7:00 – 10:30pm

20 October – 10 November 2007

Black Maria Gallery: 3137 Glendale Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90039
Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 12pm until 6pm (or by appointment)

Participating Artists: Bask, John Casey, Ken Garduno, Douglas Alvarez, Martina Secondo Russo, Nicoz
Balboa, Andre Firmiano, Hagop Belian, Pogo, Nina Nichols, Angela Penaredondo, Claudio Parentela,
Sam Saghatelian, Glynnis Reed and Jasko.

According to Black Maria Gallery director Zara Zeitountsian, the exhibition, whose title was inspired by a
song by the punk group Gogol Bordello, is homage to a particular facet of the immigrant experience.
“While immigration may be as American as apple pie, there are those individuals or groups who shape an
extraordinary reality as they reinvent themselves in a new environment,” Zeitountsian said. “It is this
constructive, hugely life-affirming aspect of immigration that our upcoming show celebrates.
“A veritable maelstrom of challenges awaits an immigrant in a new country: the language barrier,
unfamiliar rules and ways of doing things, different traditions and cultural approaches, the very imperative
of carving one’s own path out of an alien place,” Zeitountsian continued. “What’s significant is that certain
immigrants will plunge into that maelstrom with gusto, and will not only tackle all the challenges but color
the whole experience in terms of their own cultural roots and identity. I think there’s something of the
spirit of punk music and art to all this.”

“Immigrant Punk” will feature new and recent works by a number of local and international artists. A Black
Maria Gallery representative said that though not all participating artists are immigrants, most could
perfectly identify with the immigrant experience through the style and inspiration of their work or because
of their families’ deep immigrant roots.

Zeitountsian further commented on the parallels between punk and immigration. “Punk music and art do
not pertain strictly to a specific cultural movement that exploded in the 1970s and continued to evolve on
the fringe,” she explained. “Rather, punk is a certain attitude and way of seeing that doesn’t necessarily
come with props and a mohawk. It’s about the exuberance and joy of rejecting limitations and doing one’s
own thing, of following the call of an inner rhythm and bringing one’s own style to the mosh pit.”
“Immigrant Punk” will remain open until Saturday, November 10.
